“I’ve been interest in Japan and textiles since grammar school. At seventeen I set off for Japan to be trained in traditional sewing and dyeing techniques and a life-long adventure.
For over fifty years, while specializing in katazome – a method of dyeing using natural dyes on natural fibers – I have designed garments to show off my textiles while paying respect to the Japanese aesthetic. My work has been shown primarily in North America and Asia, with shows sponsored by Kodansha, the US State Department, and the Western Mafia of Japan.
I live in a 14,000 square foot studio, in the tiny town of Covelo, nestled in the Yolla Bolly mountains of Northern California. Here, I grow my dyes, design my fabrics, and construct my garments. A great deal of my time is spent in sharing my love of Japanese textiles and traditional techniques through teaching and preparing my publications”. John Marshall

This workshop is an opportunity to explore and create a new way to express your passion for textiles. John will inspire 'All things Japanese' in us as we create through the beautiful, historic lens of Asian textiles. We'll combine traditional construction methods and stitched garment making in the workshop. Some makers work with one form, tradition or concept their whole lives, exploring and deepening their creativity through a lens that calls them. Retreat Cost: $2,375.
Deposit: $600. due upon registration

Cancellation policy: Your deposit is non-refundable or transferable. Cancellation up to 30 days prior to the retreat, your payments (less deposit) are refundable. For cancellations within 15 days of the retreat, there is no refund.
